CS2 glossary

The words of the skin market, defined from the game files, Valve’s announcements and the Counter-Strike wiki. Every entry shows the prices we recorded today on the marketplaces we track.

Doppler phases
Doppler is a knife finish that arrived with the Chroma Case. It comes in seven versions, called phases: Phase 1 to 4, Ruby, Sapphire and Black Pearl. The Steam Market sells all of them under one name.
Blue gem
A blue gem is a Case Hardened skin whose pattern is mostly blue. The name comes from players, not from Valve, and these copies usually sell for more than the rest.
Float
Float is a number between 0 and 1 that measures how worn a skin is. It’s rolled at random when the weapon is obtained, never changes afterwards, and gives the skin its wear name: Factory New, Minimal Wear, Field-Tested, Well-Worn or Battle-Scarred.
Vanilla knife
A vanilla knife is a knife with no finish: no paint, so no wear and no float. Its market name is just the knife, “★ Karambit”, with no “|” and no wear.
Souvenir
A Souvenir weapon comes from a Major. It carries tournament stickers that are already applied, and it’s an item of its own: its market name starts with “Souvenir” and it has its own prices.
StatTrak™
A StatTrak™ weapon carries a counter that records the kills made by its owner. It’s a separate version of the skin, with its own market name and its own price.
Fade
Fade is an airbrushed finish: transparent paints that fade together over a chrome base coat. Its “percentage” doesn’t exist in the game. It’s a value worked out by the community.
Rarity
Rarity is the quality grade Counter-Strike 2 gives every item. For weapon skins it runs from Consumer Grade to Covert. The game shows it as a colour, and case odds are published grade by grade.
